Several literacy-based teaching initiatives are implemented in our school:
Literacy Lift-Off:
The Literacy Lift-Off programme is an early intervention programme that helps to raise literacy levels in reading, writing and comprehension. Pupils are tested to ascertain literacy levels prior to engaging in LLO. This informs the teaching that follows and ensures that the programme is child-centred, and ensures that all pupils will work confidently and achieve of their best. The programme uses the station teaching model, typically consisting of four reading, writing and phonics groups. The pupils are highly motivated, and enjoy engaging with a variety of activities on a daily basis.
SGLI (Small Group Literacy Instruction):
SGLI takes place from 3rd to 6th Class. This is a follow on from our very successful Literacy Lift Off programme run from Juniors to Second class. SGLI is a programme which consists of hour-long sessions, focusing on all aspects of literacy. Children are grouped and read books targeted to their level as well as working on other activities such as writing, comprehension and word work. It promotes enjoyment, fluency, comprehension and confidence. Successful reading helps to develop your child’s independence.
